For International Visitors:
  • While a Chinese bank account unlocks full functionality, limited functionality is still available for visitors. Here are your options:

    • International Credit Card: Some international Visa or Mastercard credit cards might be accepted for in-store payments. Check with your card issuer for compatibility before your trip.
    • Alternative Solutions: Explore partnering with a local resident to create an account or consider virtual credit card solutions designed for travelers in China. (Note: Always research and choose reputable providers for such solutions)
Verification:
  • Select your ID type and enter details exactly as registered with your bank.
  • A verification code will be sent to your bank’s phone number (for residents) or your email address (for some international credit card options). Enter it to complete the linking process.

Creating an Alipay Account:

  • Download the App: Grab the latest version of Alipay from the app store.
  • Sign Up: Use your Chinese phone number to register. You’ll receive a confirmation code via text message. Enter it and set a secure password.
  • Link Your Card (Optional): Open the app, tap “Me” in the bottom right corner, then “My Account.” If you want to pay in stores, tap “Add Card” next to “My Cards.”
  • Set Up Your Payment Password: Create a six-digit code for secure online payments.

Congratulations!  Your bank card or limited account should now be active. Now you can pay with your phone almost anywhere in China. To pay, simply tap “Pay” and display your personal QR code for scanning by the merchant.
